A day in the life of a Pre-Primary and Kindergarten Student
|
8:45 - 9:00 am |
Drop Off
Children arrive and are personally greeted by teachers, both as they get out of the car and when they enter the classroom. |
|
9:00 - 11:00 am |
Montessori Work Period
Students independently choose work from any area of the classroom and are free to move about, socialize, or work together peacefully. At some time during the work period, students and teachers come together to greet each other, sing, engage in movement activity, or celebrate a chid's birthday. During Circle Time, teachers also give whole group presentations of work and lead discussions on areas of study. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, Art Studio meets between 9:30 and 11:00. Small groups of students from both Pre-Primary classrooms are invited to Art Studio by our art teacher. Snack, jointly provided by school and parents, is available to students throughtout the day. |
|
11:00 - 11:30 am |
Enrichment Classes
We offer three enrichment classes: Art HIstory, Music and Movement and Spanish. Students attend each enrichment class for thirty minutes once each week. |
|
11:30 - 12:10 pm |
Recess
Students play outdoors except in the most extreme weather. Pre-Primary recess is separate from Elementary recess. We encourage imaginative, non-agressive play. |
|
12:15 - 1:00 pm |
Lunch
Students bring their lunches from home, and teachers and students eat together in the classroom. This is an important part of the day for reading aloud (before and after lunch), developing conversation skills, and gaining independence (children unpack their own lunches and clean up after themselves). Teachers model table manners and good nutrition. |
|
1:00 pm |
Dismissal
Pre-Primary children who attend until one o'clock are picked up at the side door.
|
|
1:15 - 2:45 pm |
Rest-Time/Extended Montessori
Full day pre-kindergarteners have a 20-30 minute rest period in which they listen to a story or music. A Montessori work period follows, ending with clean up and Circle Time. |
|
1:15 - 2:45 pm |
Kindergarten Program
During the afternoon, the Kindergarteners form a same-age peer group in which social as well as academic growth continues to be addressed as it is in their morning program. In addition to work with Montessori materials, teachers plan projects that match students’ interests and which extend and connect academic areas. Emphasis is placed on developing strong reading, writing, and speaking skills as well as good work habits. Kindergarteners also have weekly Library, Fitness, additional Art Studio, and an additional Spanish class. Bi-monthly meetings with their Elementary II Book Buddies help Kindergarteners develop relationships with older readers and mentors.
