Kindergarten Program Curriculum
Our Kindergarten environment provides opportunities for individual development and independence within the context of the social five-year-old community. The students are able to continue the Montessori work period with a prepared environment that meets the specific needs of each child at his or her particular stage of development. Having two Kindergarten classes allows the students to work more in depth with all the Montessori materials in each classroom, as well as providing a smaller, more focused group.
The following areas of the environment constitute our exciting Kindergarten Program:
- Language: Includes listening and expressive skills, reading, writing, comprehension and grammar. Language encompasses and is integrated into all areas of our Montessori environment.
- Math: Active use of manipulative materials to help the child internalize concepts of numerals, quantities, symbols, sequence, operations and basic facts.
- Geography/Cultural Activities: Hands on, in-depth exploration of the seven continents and their diverse cultures and habitats.
- Science: A comprehensive study of physical and life sciences including plant and animal kingdoms and geological studies.
- Sensorial: Enables the child to order, classify, and describe sensory impressions in relation to mass, size, color, pitch.
- Practical Life: Weaving, cooking, sewing, etc.
In addition to the academic opportunities we offer, we carefully nurture each child's personal growth and social development.
Throughout the year, both sets of students and teachers come together on a regular basis for joint activities. These include:
- Library - listening to a story read by our Librarian; checking out books on a weekly basis.
- Book Buddies - with the Elementary II students.
- Seasonal, holiday, cultural activities - cooking, crafts, etc. done in school.
- Field Lessons - trips to places outside of school that enhance and correlate with our kindergarten curriculum. A sampling of our field lessons:
Plimoth Plantation
